Journaling: My mother brought me home from the hospital in this mint green dress. She stuck the tiny matching bow into my wispy copper peach fuzz with Karo syrup. My little nursery was decorated in the same shade of green. Even now, green remains my favorite color. When I was expecting Eleanor we, like my parents, did not know if she was a girl or a boy, but I laundered the little green dress and hung it in the nursery closet so it would be ready…just in case. She was born at home, so there was no trip home from the hospital. Instead, she wore the dress to our traditional first dinner out. When I looked more closely at the dress, I discovered that it is handmade. There is tiny delicate hand embroidery on it, and it is clearly hand hemmed. I wondered who made it. I dropped Chug an email to see if she might know. In her response, I was suprised to learn that Allison and Wendy each wore the dress home from the hospital too! That made me wish I had sent it down to Austin to Allison, when Eavan was born, so she could have been included in the tradition. Chug has forgotten who made the little dress. Mom would have remembered, but some things were just lost along with her. At least we have the dress, and each other.
Journaling: February 20, 2008

We lost my mother to Leukemia 5 years ago. Next week is her birthday. Chug is her cousin, and like an aunt to me, as they were both only children. Allison & Wendy are Chug’s daughters, Eavan is Allison’s daughter who is 9 months older than my daughter Eleanor.

The photos are of Eleanor & me, each wearing the dress at age 2 months. I scanned and extracted the embroidery from the dress to use as an element on the page. I also scanned my mother’s handwriting from the back of the photo of me and blended it into the photo, then did the same with my handwriting on Eleanor’s photo.
